How Crypto ETF/ETP Fees Work

The headline annual fee is only one part of a crypto ETF/ETP's cost. Product expenses, trading spreads and differences between market price and net asset value affect different parts of the holding or trading experience. Separating them makes fee comparisons more transparent.

The headline annual fee is only one part of a crypto ETF/ETP's cost. Product expenses, trading spreads and differences between market price and net asset value affect different parts of the holding or trading experience. Separating them makes fee comparisons more transparent.

The annual fee

An annual rate of 0.25% is roughly $25 on a constant $10,000 holding over a year, before other costs. Ongoing fund expenses reduce assets rather than arriving as a separate bill.

For a current example, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF issuer page lists a 0.25% sponsor fee, checked on 19 October 2026. The issuer also states that IBIT is not an investment company registered under the US Investment Company Act of 1940. Its sponsor-fee label should therefore be retained rather than silently relabelled as a mutual-fund expense ratio. Source: iShares.

Fee waivers can reduce a published charge temporarily. Their expiry dates and asset thresholds belong alongside the rate; a reduced rate alone does not describe the long-term charge.

Trading costs are separate

Brokerage charges and the bid-ask spread arise when shares trade. The spread is the gap between quoted buying and selling prices. Market price may also sit above NAV, at a premium, or below it, at a discount. These are separate from the annual product charge. The SEC investor bulletin on fund fees explains these distinctions and temporary expense reductions.

Compare like with like

The Explorer separates spot, staking, futures and other strategies. A fee comparison needs a defined asset, strategy and region, together with the issuer's fee label and any waiver conditions.

This is an explainer, not a lowest-fee ranking. The earlier market-wide fee range and European temporary-rate examples have been removed because they were not supported by a consistently dated issuer comparison. The single issuer example above does not establish the cheapest product or the full cost of any transaction.
